Hippotherapy

From Play To Words

Movement that supports communication, coordination, and confidence.

At From Play to Words, hippotherapy uses the natural movement of a horse as part of therapeutic intervention delivered by a trained therapist. As the horse walks, its rhythmic, repetitive movement provides powerful sensory and motor input that supports development across the body and brain.

Hippotherapy is guided by licensed professionals such as Occupational Therapists or Speech-Language Pathologists who use the horse’s movement intentionally to support goals related to posture, balance, coordination, communication, and regulation.

For many children, learning happens best through movement and play. The horse provides a motivating, engaging environment where children can build skills while experiencing success, connection, and joy.The horse’s movement closely mirrors the natural movement pattern of the human pelvis during walking. This creates thousands of opportunities in a single session for the body and brain to practice coordinating movement, posture, and regulation.Through carefully structured activities, hippotherapy can support:

Core strength and postural control

Balance and
body awareness

Sensory processing and regulation

Motor planning
and coordination

Attention and
engagement

Speech, breath support, and communication

Confidence and
emotional connection

What a Session Looks Like

Each session is guided by a therapist and supported by trained team members to ensure safety and comfort. Sessions may include:

  • Mounted activities using the horse’s movement
  • Games that encourage communication and engagement
  • Balance and coordination challenges
  • Activities that build attention, sequencing, and motor planning
  • Opportunities for connection, regulation, and success

The focus is always on skill development through meaningful, motivating experiences.

Hippotherapy vs. Therapeutic Riding

These two terms are often used interchangeably, but they serve different purposes.

Hippotherapy

  • A clinical therapy intervention delivered by licensed therapists (such as OTs or SLPs)
  • The horse’s movement is used intentionally to support therapy goals
  • Sessions are integrated into a child’s individual treatment plan

Therapeutic Riding

  • A recreational riding program adapted for individuals with disabilities
  • Led by certified riding instructors, not therapists
  • Focuses on learning riding skills, recreation, and confidence building

Both programs offer valuable benefits, but hippotherapy specifically targets developmental, sensory, motor, and communication goals within a therapy framework.

Did You Know?

A walking horse can provide over 100 rhythmic movement inputs per minute to the rider’s body.

This dynamic movement helps activate muscles, improve balance, and stimulate the brain in ways that are difficult to replicate in a traditional therapy setting. For many children, this creates a powerful opportunity to build foundational skills for movement, communication, and regulation.
