About Us

our philosophires

We believe that enhancing your child's social and cognitive development through interactions in play is all important.

From Play to Words consultants believe in the power of play. During play, children develop language and motor skills. Opportunities to play also present opportunities to socialize and engage in problem solving.

We contract and/or employ Occupational Therapists who specialize in sensory processing, visual motor and fine motor development. We also contract Physiotherapy and Psychology support. We provide Therapy Assistant support as well as Respite support to families.

Dr. Jean Piaget, upon whose theories many of the foundations of Early Childhood Education have been built, said, "The young child is an explorer, and it is the job of the adults around her to provide the experiences and materials to stimulate her development." As a parent, you are the best candidate for channeling your child's play experiences in a way that is challenging and developmentally appropriate. As your speech-language pathology team, we present the information and expertise to best guide you as you shape your child's play into meaningful communication opportunities.

WE ARE IN TREATY 6

We acknowledge that we are on Treaty 6 territory, a traditional meeting grounds, gathering place, and travelling route to the Cree, Saulteaux, Blackfoot, Metis, Dene and Nakota Sioux. We acknowledge all the many First Nations, Metis, and Inuit whose footsteps have marked these lands for centuries.

OUR TEAM

We are a dedicated group of educators, therapists, and specialists committed to providing a nurturing and inclusive environment for preschoolers with motor speech disorders and additional support needs. Our team combines a deep understanding of child development with individualized support to help each child reach their full potential. Through collaboration, creativity and compassion, we create personalized learning experiences that celebrate each child's unique abilities.

Together, we work to foster a sense of belonging, growth, and confidence, ensuring that every child is given the tools and opportunities to thirive both in and outside of the classroom. Thank you for allowing us to be a part of your chiild's learning journey.

PARENT TESTIMONIALS

(It) has been rewarding to see our child respond so positively to one on one direct therapy. I have seen growth and progress (in 3 sessions). Our child is also HIGHLY responsive/motivated by (Jodi’s) enthusiasm and energetic personality! I feel supported and equipped to encourage communication verbally for my child with refreshing/new ideas and specific, clear strategies.

KAREN, EDMONTON

Jodi is amazing. Thank you for all your expectations. Thank you for pushing (my son) to succeed.

EMMA, EDMONTON

Thank you does not seem enough when other people tell my how well (my son) is talking now. Your extra effort and attention are so appreciated, you will never know how much. I have such confidence that the road will not be so rough. Thank you! Thank you! Thank you!

KRISTY, STONY PLAIN

Dear Jodi, We feel so lucky to have had you be our SLP this past year. (Our son) absolutely adores you and I’m sure it has something to do with the fact that he intuitively knows you really understand him and his (social) language challenges. We can’t thank you enough for your input to both his home and school plans. Your guidance has been invaluable.

KERI, EDMONTON

Dear Jodi, Thank you so much for all your hard work. You are the best SLP (our son) has ever had and we will be forever grateful. Thank you one million times over.

jodi sommer

Jodi Sommer has been working as a speech-language pathologist (SLP) in the Edmonton area for over ten years. She has been active in both the autism and Down syndrome community throughout this time, offering both individual and group consultative services. Jodi has worked in Early Education classrooms and provided consultative services to a number of school districts and preschool settings.

Jodi is highly sought after for her motor speech therapy approach, PROMPT. Jodi is one of 40 Certified PROMPT Instructors in the world, and one of three in Canada, and travels to teach other SLPs about motor speech treatment.

Jodi also holds advanced training in Michelle Garcia Winner's Social Thinking®, having trained under Michelle and her staff in San Jose, CA. Jodi provides highly specialized and original social communication curriculum that is engaging and promotes generalization at home and school.

Jodi's play-based but systematic approach to language treatment sets her apart from other agencies. She provides parent training and practice in small increments that build on each other and can be completed easily in daily activities, reducing the stress of additional homework on already busy families.

Therapy at From Play to Words is silly, loud and fun! It is a "You can do it! Let me help you!" environment. Jodi is constantly building on client's strengths to increase skills across the Cognitive-Linguistic, Physical-Sensory and Social-Emotional domains.

Jodi only hires SLPs that she has personally trained. Her staff is hand-picked for their knowledge-base and she has exceptionally high standards. Jodi's teams have diverse experience in Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) including PECS, PODD, Tobii, TouchChat and Proloquo2Go.
